Born in South Korea, Sunhae Im studied in Seoul, and then completed her training with Roland Hermann. Since then she has worked with such conductors as Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie, Fabio Biondi, Thomas Hengelbrock, Sigiswald Kuijken, Manfred Honeck, Frans Brüggen, Kent Nagano, Riccardo Chailly, Sylvain Cambreling, Ton Koopman, and Marek Janowski.

She has sung under the direction of René Jacobs in Bach's St Matthew Passion and Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, as well as in numerous operas including Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (Euridice), Telemann's Der geduldige Sokrates (Rodisette), and Haydn's Orlando Paladino (Eurilla). She can also be heard on several of the same conductor's recordings for harmonia mundi, among them La clemenza di Tito (Servilia)(Servilia), Idomeneo (Ilia), and Don Giovanni (Zerlina).

Sunhae Im made her European stage debut in 2001 in Frankfurt and Hanover. With the opera companies in these cities she sang such roles as Zerlina, Blondchen, Barbarina, Papagena, Adele, Yniold, and L'Amour (Orphée aux enfers). Since then she has also appeared as a guest at the Hamburg Staatsoper, the Deutsche Oper and Staatsoper in Berlin, the Opéra National de Paris, and the Aix-en-Provence and Innsbruck festivals. Her concert repertoire is centred on Handel, Bach, Mozart, and Haydn. In December 2008 she sang Handel's Messiah with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, followed in January 2010 by Mahler's Fourth Symphony in Pittsburgh.
